Inaugural 3-day Vipassana courses to be held at Dhamma Modana on Vancouver Island

The Vancouver Island Vipassana Association is excited to announce the first residential three-day meditation courses to be held at Dhamma Modana for old students who have already completed a 10-day S.N. Goenka Vipassana course.

For many years we have hosted Vipassana courses at alternative sites, near Nanaimo in August 2013 and previously at Camp Pringle, near Shawnigan Lake.

It has been our goal to hold residential courses on the new centre land. With that vision in mind, the Trust has been developing the Dhamma Modana site for several years. There is now electricity, a rustic Dhamma Hall and a small building which can be used for cooking. Water will be supplied from off-site. The dining area will be a temporary structure and there will be rustic showers and outhouses. Accommodations will be student provided tents.

The courses, with a maximum capacity of 30 students each, will be single gender so that it will be much easier to provide segregation. Students will need to bring their own tent, mattress, bedding, comfortable camping chair if desired, flashlight and all their personal toiletries. Often these are provided on 10 day courses, but will not be provided for these three-day courses.

These courses will be a wonderful opportunity to deepen the meditative atmosphere on this special land.

1st Work Period: June 12-13, followed by Day Sitting June 14

There will be quite a lot of set up involved with organizing the courses. Dining areas will need to be constructed, camping sites leveled, kitchen set-ups organized and storage and benches moved from the Dhamma Hall.

Costs related to the 3 day courses

The Trust cannot build any further structures on the land until a building permit is taken out. There is a need for a workshop and storage of materials used for the three-day courses. We are considering purchasing a storage container, which will cost approximately $8000 to purchase and have delivered to the land. This storage container would be invaluable in terms of providing a workshop, providing storage for tools, kitchen equipment, cushions, blankets, pillows and materials for constructing a temporary dining hall.

The Trust will need to complete the small 10 x 10 building that we are allowed to build to house the pumping materials. The plumbing still needs to be done, as well as the cabinets and the countertops. There'll also need to be shelving constructed. The estimated cost to complete this is approximately $3500.

Gates will also need to be built so that the bear fencing can be installed. We will rent port-a-potties, build a temporary dining facility and showers, purchase dishes and cooking pans, as well as many supplies that will be needed for the courses.

The budget, including the operating costs and infrastructure costs, will be approximately $18,000 for both courses.

Financial contributions may be made in any of several ways. Please go to the Donation page of our website, http://www.modana.dhamma.org for financial estimates of construction.Because of security, one cannot go directly to the Old Student site, so on the New Student page please click on the Old Student tab, and when prompted, enter the username: oldstudent, password: behappy.

The Value of Monthly Donations

It's very important to establish a strong monthly donation income stream. Regular monthly donations of $20 or $30 will have a huge impact on our ability to develop and operate the centre. Currently there are 30 Old Students donating monthly.

Monthly donors have commented that their monthly donations are affordable and convenient because they are automated to come out of their bank account or off their credit card. They report feeling connected in an ongoing way and are really happy to think about their donation contributing to the evolution of the centre on Vancouver Island.

To contribute monthly or to give a onetime donation, please go to the Donation page of the website..

All donations are tax-deductible. If donations are contributed monthly, a cumulative annual receipt will be issued at the end of the year.

The teaching is given freely because it is considered a priceless gift. Donating towards the building of a house of Dhamma is also a priceless gift! The time is ripe!

Before giving, the mind of the giver is happy.
While giving, the mind of the giver is made peaceful.
After having given, the mind of the giver is uplifted.
